Card users warned not to be complacent about chip and pin protection

08 January 2007

Consumers have been advised against complacency in regards to chip and pin payments.

Apacs warns that although the service offers clients a level of security, the old rules still apply and card users should ensure that they keep their card and pin safe from fraudsters.

The advice, from the UK trade association for payments, follows research from the Financial Times which suggested that banks are now less inclined to compensate customers who have suffered loss as a result of card fraud.

"One of the things that we've said is that chip and pin is a layer of protection, but that doesn't mean that we, as individuals, should stop taking the normal sensible steps to protect our cards," commented Sandra Quinn, director of corporate communications at Apacs.

Ms Quinn also noted that security pitfalls for customers to avoid include writing down their pin numbers, leaving their card lying around and failing to shield pin entry at checkouts or cash points.
